Bali Butterfly Park

Bali Butterfly Park (Taman Kupu-Kupu Bali)

Denpasar Attractions

Taman Kupu-Kupu Bali or Bali Butterfly Park is a butterfly and insect conservation facility which exhibits a wide range of specimens through its park grounds of approximately 3,000sqm located in the village of Wanasari, 6.5km north of the Tabanan regency’s capital and 30km northwest of Denpasar. The park claims to be the largest of its kind in Asia.

The butterfly park is a convenient stopover on excursions to the island’s northern region via Tabanan. Here, visiting families will experience an educational and inspiring tour to see hundreds of butterflies from the 15 known species that thrive in Indonesia’s tropics, as well as various other insects and arachnids in extensive and informative displays.

Besides the many live specimens that are bred at the park, there are also collections of dried butterfly and insect specimens (butterflies have varying but naturally short life spans) which can also be souvenirs, set in glass frames.

Visitors will have the opportunity to see up close, colourful and protected specimens, such as the common birdwing (Troides helena) and the Bali peacock (Papilio peranthus) and the majestic paradise birdwing (Ornithoptera paradisea). Unique and odd-looking stick insects, leaf insects, scorpions, large hairy spiders and various beetles are displayed in glass cases.

Various species from all over the Indonesian archipelago are collected in one convenient park. An interesting and very educational part of the tour is the opportunity for youngsters to see closely the many stages of the metamorphoses of different species, from egg, larvae and pupae, to cocoon and large life-size butterflies.

The butterfly park serves as an ex-situ conservation site and preserves several endangered species in its collection. It also serves as a research centre for national and international researchers and academics.

Good to Know about Taman Kupu-Kupu Bali

Taman Kupu Kupu Bali was opened in 1993 following the International Butterfly Conference that was held that year in Makassar, South Sulawesi, with the idea that Indonesia’s rich insect world should be promoted for the Indonesian peoples’ environmental awareness.

The park is among the highlighted stopovers among international visitors who tour through the northern regions via Tabanan. It is conveniently located at an altitude suitable for the insects to breed and thrive, in the sub village of Sandan Lebah, Wanasari, Tabanan, en route with the natural highlights of the Jatiluwih rice terraces, Air Panas hot springs and Mount Batukaru.

To be able to witness and enjoy the scene of many fluttering live specimens within the enclosed flower garden compounds, visitors should come early, preferably before 10:00 in the morning when the species are at their most active, siphoning off fresh dew and nectar.
